Shayna is the “miracle dog” who helped to save my spirit, and my life, after 9/11. She’s my first dog, whom I adopted from a local shelter when she was twelve weeks old.
Here’s an overview video about the book I spent six years writing about her, and how she completely transformed my life:
I created a robust website to pay tribute to her, Shayna the Miracle Dog, which contains hundreds of pictures and videos of her and us together, since our first full day together – April 7, 2002, and extending to the present day.
Until I was a more savvy dog parent, Shayna and I were adversely affected in a variety of ways by veterinarians, and those who make and sell edible dog products. I now have good reason to believe that at least in part, thanks to the foods and some treats I was feeding her – because I was told by “authorities” they were healthy – Shayna developed a number of health maladies, including kidney disorder, liver cancer, and now, heart cancer. And as I describe here, I have also encountered several veterinarians who engage in reprehensible practices, which have also affected Shayna’s care (in one shocking case, just recently).
I owe Shayna more than I could ever repay. In tribute to her, and to all the wonderful things that dogs can give us humans, I have created Shayna’s List – to help correct this situation, and to forever associate her name and legacy with good things.
